Why the new moon
The new moon is the start of the moon's cycle, when it sits between the earth and the sun and we can barely see it. Dark sky, blank page. In lots of spiritual traditions it's the time for new beginnings and intentions.
If the full moon is "what am I letting go of", the new moon is "okay, what do I want now?" ✨
How to write an intention that sticks
An intention isn't a resolution. It's softer, and honestly it works better. A few rules:
- Present tense. "I go to bed by eleven", not "I will try to go to bed earlier".
- Specific. "I walk for ten minutes after lunch" beats "I'm healthier".
- About you. You can't set an intention for someone else to text you back. Sorry.
- One to three, max. One a month is honestly perfect.
- Feels good to read. If it makes you tense, rewrite it until it makes you smile.
A 20-minute new moon ritual
- Clear the space. Tidy a little corner and open a window for fresh air.
- Light a candle somewhere stable, or switch on a soft lamp.
- Breathe. Ten rounds of slow box breathing to land.
- Look back. Write one line about how last month went. No judgement.
- Dream a little. Ask yourself: what would make the next month feel good? Write everything that comes.
- Choose. Circle one to three and rewrite them as present-tense intentions.
- Say them out loud. Then put them somewhere you'll see daily: your mirror, your phone lock screen, your bullet journal.
- Take one tiny action tonight. Lay out your walking shoes, put your phone on the charger outside your bedroom. Tiny counts.

Write a new moon intention
On or near the new moon, write one intention for the next month in the present tense, like 'I go to bed by eleven'. Keep it somewhere you'll see it.
New moon journal prompts
- What do I want more of this month?
- What would future me thank me for starting?
- Where do I want to feel braver?
- What's one small habit that would change my whole vibe?
New moon and manifesting
A lot of people use the new moon to manifest. Our take: writing your intention down and taking small, real steps towards it is the most powerful manifesting method there is. The moon just makes it cuter.
Then on the full moon, check in: what's growing, and what's ready to go?
