What the crown chakra is
The crown chakra is chakra number seven, at the very top of your head. In Sanskrit it's Sahasrara, the "thousand-petalled" lotus, which is the most extra description possible and we love it.
It's beyond the elements. It's described as pure awareness, connection to something bigger, whatever that means to you: the universe, nature, God, the vibes. In the modern colour system it's violet, or white, like light itself.
Its mantra is usually silence. Some people use OM. Either way, this chakra is less about doing and more about being.
Signs your crown chakra is closed
People often describe:
- feeling like life is a bit flat or meaningless
- feeling disconnected, from people, from nature, from yourself
- being stuck in your head all day, with no quiet moments
- or the opposite: so floaty and spiritual that real life gets ignored
That last one is why we always balance the crown with the root. Head in the clouds, feet on the ground ☁️
An 11-minute stillness meditation
Eleven minutes is a classic kundalini yoga meditation length. It feels long the first time. It gets easier, promise.
- Sit tall. Rest your hands in your lap, the right hand resting in the left, thumbs lightly touching.
- Close your eyes and let your breath be natural.
- Imagine a soft violet or white light at the top of your head, like sun coming through a cloud.
- Each time your mind wanders (it will), notice it, and come back to that light.
- When the chime goes, stay still for one more breath. Then wiggle your fingers and toes.
Stillness
11 minutes, with a soft chime at the end.

Practice
A phone-free first twenty minutes
For the first twenty minutes after you wake up, no phone. Water, light, a stretch, a window. Let your brain boot up on its own.
